GLP-1 medications are prescription drugs
Medications in the GLP-1 receptor agonist class, including semaglutide, and the dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide, are available in the United States by prescription only. Whether any of them is appropriate for you depends on your medical history, your current medications, and other factors that only a qualified clinician can assess.
These medications carry real risks. Commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. More serious risks described in prescribing information include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney injury related to dehydration, and diabetic retinopathy complications. Products in this class carry a boxed warning regarding thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rodent studies, and are contraindicated in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2.
